Situated in Northern Cumbria is the idyllically quaint Top Lodge. Once the original gatehouse to Netherby Hall, this stunning cottage has been faithfully renovated into a tranquil hideaway for two. Ideal for couples celebrating a special occasion, an anniversary or just looking for an opportunity to reconnect. Being just minutes away from the famed Gretna Green, it’s also well located for newlyweds to enjoy a honeymoon away from it all.
Top Lodge is located on the Netherby Estate, with open countryside to explore and the River Esk to walk beside. And if you’re a keen angler you may wish to fish for salmon in the autumn, and sea trout in the summer.
Refurbished to an exacting standard, Top Lodge is a home filled with serene calm. The whitewashed reclaimed wood cladding covers the walls throughout, lending a warm, natural vibe. Heritage accents are scattered throughout, from the rugs, the furniture, through to the characterful feature walls. Downstairs you’ll find the open plan kitchen and dining space. A warm hub of the home, the stylish fully fitted kitchen has everything you could need for your self-catering break. Downstairs is also where you’ll find the gorgeous, spacious shower room. In the evenings, settle on the beautiful sofa in front of a roaring fire in the wood burning stove. Opt to watch a little television. Or simply luxuriate in one another’s company. Come nighttime, head upstairs to bed. Here you’ll find your double bed, along with a rather lovely freestanding rolltop bath. Soak away your day in a sumptuous bubbly bath and collapse into bed fully relaxed.
Head out of the boot room (ideal for those muddy boots and damp coats) onto your private deck. With a barbecue on hand to grill a feast, and outdoor dining furniture to dine al fresco. For the ultimate in outdoor relaxation, take the little path into the woods. Here you’ll find an outdoor bath beneath the trees. Perfect for taking a moment to yourself with nature’s soundtrack playing softly in the background. Take snacks and a drink and revel in the tranquility.
If you feel the need to leave your romantic haven, there’s plenty to see in the area. Keen hikers will love the local walks and may wish to head to Hadrian’s Wall and walk a length of this historic site. Further afield, is the beautiful Lake District, less than an hour away. For a more urban day out, head to the medieval cathedral city of Carlisle. Explore its heritage with a trip to Carlisle Castle or Carlisle Cathedral. Or simply enjoy a day, or evening, out in modern Carlisle, sampling the many shops, restaurants and the nightlife. As well as two entertainment venues, The Sands Centre and The Old Fire Station. Check out what’s on and book your tickets for music, comedy or theatre performances. You may wish to go slightly further afield, and head into Scotland. In forty minutes, you could be in the Scottish market town of Dumfries. Or for a more coastal experience, head to the Solway Coast, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Couples seeking a romantic sanctuary to escape their everyday lives.
Netherby Estate is also home to two other fabulous properties – Netherby Treehouse and Cleugh Foot.
